Jacksonville was founded in 1851 when the discovery of gold stimulated extensive growth and attracted people from many different backgrounds. Set amid the foothills of the Siskiyou Mountains and with a predominance of distinctively “cowboy style” old western and Victorian architectural styles, the atmosphere is both picturesque and historical. In 1966 the entire town was designated a National Historic Landmark by the US Department of the Interior and much of its history is preserved in its historic buildings and museums as well as in the surrounding landscapes which include the area known as Rich Gulch, where gold was mined, and the old cemetery above the town.

Today, Jacksonville offers visitors a gentle and unique shopping and dining experience with its many small specialty shops and its unusual restaurants. Bed and breakfast lodging accommodations exist within and around the town. During the summer months and into early autumn the Peter Britt Music Festival brings top name contemporary, classical and jazz entertainers to town to perform in this beautiful outdoor venue. Outdoor recreational opportunities include exploring the 300 acre Jacksonville Woodlands Natural Park with its seven miles of trails that include interpretive panels along the Rich Gulch area, the Zigler Interpretive Trail, and the Beekman Plant Arboretum. Several area wineries offer tours and tastings throughout the year and the town dresses up Victorian style for its Christmas time celebrations and welcomes you with old fashioned style and grace.
